Creating a Work-Life Balance
"Work hard, play hard"—isn't that a motto we'd all like to live by? The feeling of accomplishment after a job well done rewarded by some time spent doing what you love. However, in a business that is typically close to home, the line between work and personal life can become quickly blurred. Even if you love what you do so much that it doesn't feel like work, there are benefits to separating business and relaxation.
Studies show that approximately one in four people feel torn between work and family—the key predictor in this feeling is the amount of time that person spends at their job. Initially, those extra hours can feel rewarding and might be necessary, however, they can cause a build-up of stress and leave little time for personal enjoyment. Not only is it important to create a boundary between your job and home life for yourself, but also for your employees. When employees feel their personal time is valued, they are happier and more productive at work.
There is no perfect equation for balancing life, but these steps may get you closer to a happy-medium:
- Prioritize—what matters most to you? Think of the top three to five things in your life and rank them. Once you've identified what is most important to you, commit to creating your schedule around those top items. If family is in your number one spot, you'll find it easier to consider time spent with them as non-negotiable.
- Track Your Time—sometimes it may seem as if the hours are slipping away. The most effective way to keep your time in check is to take a typical week and track how you spent each hour of each day. This will also help you identify time that could have been used more efficiently. Naturally, your work hours will most likely outnumber your family hours, but this doesn't imply that you care less about them. It's the "disposable time" you have left each week that should reflect your priorities.
- Leave Work at Work—today's technology has allowed us to become more productive and efficient, however, it can also prevent us from truly leaving work each day. The capability to check emails, make phone calls, and stay connected to constant news can be distracting while spending time at home or on vacation. Make an effort to really "unplug" and take time to be completely present wherever you are—you'll find that you enjoy your personal time much more when you eliminate the temptation to continue working.
- Create Healthy Habits—the little things go a long way, especially when putting in the tough work that you do as logger. Simple habits, such as adequate sleep, eating a balanced diet, and regular exercise are essential for being the best you can be. Making a few adjustments in your daily routine can have you working harder and playing harder.
