Every hour, somewhere around the world, John Deere or one of its suppliers is transporting finished and unfinished goods from place to place. But when semi-trailers are half full, or packages on those trailers aren’t full, productivity suffers and overall transport costs rise.
John Deere Brazil in Montenegro carefully evaluated the inbound and outbound process of its fleet to develop a strategy that optimizes each semi-trailer load and reduces the number of total trips required to move goods.
The new strategy makes use of “sider trucks” that increase load capacity by 45% when transporting parts like tractor fenders to the plant for assembly, and returning empty packages to suppliers.
As a result, Montenegro’s transport fleet is using 45% less diesel fuel and has significantly reduced the amount of greenhouse gas emissions its fleet produces.
